Penguins sign D Orpik to six-year deal

Jul 2, 2008 - 9:20 PM PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins made another move Wednesday to secure the long-term services of a promising young player, signing defenseman Brooks Orpik to a six-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but TSN of Canada reported that the deal is worth $22.5 million.

Orpik, 27, emerged as Pittsburgh's most physical blue-liner during the Penguins' run to the Stanley Cup Finals.

One of the most sought-after free agent defensemen this summer, Orpik had one goal and a career-high 10 assists this past season and ranked second among all NHL blue-liners with 239 hits.

"Brooks has become a mainstay of our blue line and played an important role in our run to the Stanley Cup Final," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. "He provides the kind of physical presence you need on a Cup contender, and his work ethic, preparation, and determination are second to none."

The Penguins brought back Orpik hours after signing Hart Trophy finalist Evgeni Malkin to a five-year contract extension reportedly worth $43.5 million.
