Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 29-year-old Cooke recorded 10 goals and 13 assists in 78 games with the Washington Capitals and Vancouver Canucks last season. Cooke notched seven goals and four assists in 61 games with Vancouver before being dealt to Washington at the trade deadline.

"Matt is a versatile forward that will bring grit, energy and experience to our line up," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. "He is the type of player that adds depth up front and is capable of providing offense for our hockey club."

A nine-year veteran, Cooke's best season came in 2002-03 when he recorded career highs in goals (15) and assists (27) with the Canucks. A sixth-round pick in 1997 by Vancouver, Cooke has 86 goals and 124 assists in 583 games.
