WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Alex Ovechkin has wasted little time in making his mark on the young NHL season.
The reigning Hart Trophy winner looks to build off his first multi-goal performance on Monday when the Washington Capitals host the Vancouver Canucks.
Ovechkin scored a league-leading 65 goals last season and helped the Capitals reach the playoffs for the first time since 2003. After being held without a point in the season opener, Ovechkin scored a pair of goals in a 4-2 win over Chicago on Saturday.
Ovechkin helped the Capitals rebound from a 7-4 loss to Atlanta on Friday.
Washington also got a much better effort from Jose Theodore, who signed a two-year, $9 million deal in the offseason. The 32-year-old fizzled in his debut, when he was pulled after allowing four goals on 17 shots.
Theodore went going 5-0-1 with a 1.97 goals-against average last season. He may be challenged by a Vancouver team that swept a home-and-home series with Calgary by outscoring it, 11-4.
Daniel Sedin had three assists in a 6-0 win on Friday, then followed that up with two goals in Saturday's 5-4 victory. It is a surprising start to the season for Vancouver, which ranked in the bottom third of the league in goals last season (213).
Vancouver is 4-0-1 in the five meetings with Washington since a 4-3 loss in 2001.
