Lightning D Heward released from hospital

Jan 2, 2009 - 6:39 PM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Jamie Heward was released from a Washington D.C. hospital on Friday after undergoing further evaluation for a concussion.

The defenseman was removed from the ice on a stretcher at the 13:15 mark of the third period during Thursday's 7-4 loss to the Capitals.

Heward was promptly taken to Sibley Memorial Hospital and underwent further testing, where it was determined that no damage to his cervical spine occurred.

He was kept overnight as a precaution and will be sidelined indefinitely, though the prognosis for his personal health is good.

Heward, 37, was skating up ice when Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin checked him head-first into the boards. The Russian star and skated over to see if his former teammate was OK when play was stopped.

Heward was quickly attended to by trainers before carefully being taken off on a stretcher with his head and neck in supports after a seven-minute delay.

Heward has two assists in 13 games with the Lightning this season.
