Wild name Koivu captain for January
Jan 3, 2009 - 1:02 AM ST. PAUL, Minnesota (Ticker) -- Mikko Koivu apparently is doing something right.Koivu on Friday was named captain of the Minnesota Wild for January, marking the third time this season the Finn has held the honor.
The 25-year-old Koivu, whose brother Saku is the permanent captain of the Montreal Canadiens, joined Brad Bombardir and Brian Rolston as the only players in Wild history to wear the C on his jersey for three months in one season. Minnesota regularly rotates its captaincy on a monthly basis.
Koivu, who was the Wild's captain in October and November, has recorded 11 goals and a team-leading 37 points in 36 games this season. Drafted sixth overall in 2001, the 6-2, 216-pounder has registered 48 tallies and 106 assists in 239 career contests.
