Hurricanes G Ward earns 'First Star' award
Mar 23, 2009 - 4:34 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward on Monday was named the NHL's "First Star" of the Week after winning all three of his starts.Ward posted a 2.33 goals-against average, stopping 100 of 107 shots, as the Hurricanes climbed to sixth in the Eastern Conference. He is now tied for the third in the NHL in wins with 33.
Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin paced the league in scoring with eight points in three games, including a career-high five points in a 6-2 victory over Atlanta on Tuesday, to garner the "Second Star" honor. Malkin increased his league-leading point total to 105.
"The "Third Star" award went to Phoenix Coyotes right wing Shane Doan, who recorded three goals and four assists in four contests.
