DETROIT (Ticker) -- Nancy Lieberman's historic return to the WNBA did not last long.

The 50-year-old guard was waived by the Detroit Shock on Friday one day after signing a seven-day contract.

Currently a basketball analyst for ESPN, Lieberman became the oldest player to ever suit up for a WNBA game, shooting 0-of-1 from the field with two assists and two turnovers in nine minutes in the Shock's 79-61 loss to the Houston Comets on Thursday night. The Hall of Famer celebrated her 50th birthday on July 1.

The Shock were in need of players for Thursday's contest against the Comets after five players were suspended in the fallout of the brawl with the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday. Four players received one-game suspensions.

Lieberman already had set the mark as the oldest player in WNBA history with the Phoenix Mercury at 39 years, 54 days in 1997, the league's inaugural season.

A member of two United States Olympic teams, Lieberman won two college national championships at Old Dominion in the 1970s.
