After giving up a field goal on the game's opening drive, Koredell Bartley ran back the ensuing kickoff for a 100-yard touchdown, and Wake Forest led the rest of the game. The Demon Deacons had 451 yards of total offense. Quarterback Robby Ashford completed 20 of 33 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Ashford also ran the ball 14 times for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Ty Clark ran the ball 17 times for 91 yards while also catching three passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. Mississippi State freshman quarterback Kamario Taylor threw for 241 yards and a touchdown on 13 for 22 passing, while also rushing for 63 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

Robby Ashford played an extremely efficient game in leading the Deacs to the win, completing 15-25 passes for 191 yards through the air with a touchdown pass and a touchdown run. Ashford also ran the ball 10 times for 52 yards and a score in the win. Demond Claiborne rushed the ball 21 times for 98 yards and a score. Carlos Hernandez scored the first touchdown of the game on a fumble recovery and another in the 2nd half on a flea-flicker. Hernandez finished the game with 6 catches for 100 yards and the two scores. Special teams played a role for the Deacs, as they blocked two UNC field goal attempts in the win.
