WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Ticker) -- The Winnipeg Blue Bombers did not allow Barrin Simpson to test free agency, signing the middle linebacker on Wednesday.

Financial terms and the length of the deal were not disclosed.

Simpson, 31, appeared in four games last season before suffering a season-ending pectoral injury. The six-time CFL All-Star has spent his last three seasons in Winnipeg and was the Blue Bombers' leading tackler in 2006 and 2007.

"He's a dynamic player and has the versatility that will allow us to play some different fronts," Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly said. "He has the athleticism to run around a little bit and once he sees where the ball's going, he gets there in a hurry and not in a good mood."

In eight seasons with the Blue Bombers and the BC Lions, Simpson has recorded 698 tackles, 27 sacks and nine interceptions. The former Mississippi State star ranks fifth on the CFL's all-time list for tackles.
