Montero sends D-backs past Tigers
Jul 23, 2014 - 7:12 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Montero singled in the tying and go- ahead runs in the eighth inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks took a win away from the Detroit Tigers in a back-and-forth 5-4 battle on Tuesday. The Tigers went ahead in their half of the eighth when Torii Hunter laced a two-run single to center. Detroit left the bases loaded, however, and its bullpen failed to hold the lead.
Phil Coke (1-2) issued a pair of one-out walks, and Ian Krol entered from the bullpen with two outs and the bags full. Krol was ahead 0-2 on Montero before catching too much of the plate on his next pitch, and Montero punched a base hit to center to plate Ender Inciarte and David Peralta.
"I was thinking the third one I'm not going to strike out looking so I gotta be ready to swing," Montero said. "They battled, we battled, it was a really exciting game."
Addison Reed pitched around a two-out walk in the ninth to collect his 24th save. Aaron Hill made a sliding stop to his left on the game's final play and threw out Don Kelly by a half-step.
Hill also shined offensively as he homered and drove in three runs, while Peralta tripled twice and scored three times in the D-backs' fourth win in five games.
Eury De La Rosa (2-0) was credited with the win for stranding three runners in the eighth. The reliever was down 3-0 in the count to Rajai Davis before eventually catching him looking at strike three.
Rick Porcello was denied a MLB-leading 13th victory after giving up three runs on five hits over seven frames for Detroit, which took the opener of this three-game interleague series on Monday.
"We don't like to lose any game," said Porcello. "It stings either way if were down by 10 or we lose by one."
His counterpart, Chase Anderson, allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over six innings of work.
Miguel Cabrera singled in Austin Jackson in the first inning, and Hill found the left-field seats in the bottom half to even things up.
With the bases loaded in the away third, Anderson threw a ball in the dirt that got away from Montero, allowing Jackson to score the go-ahead run.
Arizona tied things in their turn in the third as Peralta tripled and scored on a Hill sacrifice fly, and the same tandem struck again in the sixth, with Peralta legging out another three-bagger and racing home on a Hill groundout.
Game Notes
Anderson was pitching on 14 days of rest ... Arizona was outhit by a 10-6 margin, though all 10 of Detroit's hits were singles ... Jackson, Cabrera and Ian Kinsler all had two hits for Detroit.
