D-backs hang on, top Rockies
Aug 9, 2014 - 6:26 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Montero's three-run homer in the first inning staked Arizona to an early lead as the Diamondbacks downed the Colorado Rockies, 5-3, in the opener of a three-game series.David Peralta added an RBI triple and stole home in the seventh inning, while Chase Anderson (7-4) recorded another quality start, allowing just one run on four hits over six innings to pick up the victory.
Michael McKenry's leadoff homer in the fifth frame and run-scoring singles from Corey Dickerson and DJ LeMahieu in the ninth accounted for Colorado's offense. Tyler Matzek (2-7) surrendered three runs on four hits and five walks over five innings in the loss, the club's 10th in its last 12 games.
Cliff Pennington worked a walk and Peralta doubled ahead of Montero's first home run since June 28 in the opening frame.
"It's nice because you can kind of settle in," Anderson said of being staked to an early lead.
Peralta provided some much-needed insurance later on.
After finding the right-field gap to knock in Ender Inciarte, Peralta took advantage of McKenry's nonchalant throw back to reliever Rex Brothers. Brothers tried rushing the catcher's throw back to the plate but wound up bobbling it, and Peralta scored easily.
"It was on me, it was my fault. I feel awful about it," McKenry said.
The Rockies put the tying run on base in the ninth after scoring twice against Addison Reed, but with two on and two outs, Reed bounced back and struck out Charlie Blackmon, putting an end to Arizona's three-game skid.
Game Notes
Anderson is 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA in his last five outings ... Arizona has won five straight meetings ... Colorado is 2-19 in its last 21 away games.
