Final/12
White Sox outlast Cubs in 12 innings
May 6, 2014 - 5:47 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Semien drove in the winning run in the 12th inning to help the Chicago White Sox to a 3-1 win over the Chicago Cubs in the opener of a four-game set.Alejandro De Aza had an RBI and a run scored while Jose Abreu also had an RBI for the White Sox, who have won two in a row on the heels of a four-game skid.
Daniel Webb (3-0) got the final out of the 11th inning to get the win, while Jose Quintana pitched seven innings in the start and gave up just one run on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts.
Junior Lake drove in the only run of the game for the Cubs, who have lost their last two. Jeff Samardzija gave up an unearned run on three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in nine innings.
"You want to pitch late in the game but this whole 100-pitch thing has become a facade," said Samardzija. "It doesn't necessarily mean anything because it depends on the guy and the situation. They've let me go late in the game and it's good because I want that."
In the 12th with Justin Grimm (1-1) on the mound, Alexei Ramirez hit a two-out single and stole second. Tyler Flowers then walked and Semien punched a double to left to score Ramirez. De Aza later worked a bases loaded walk to make it a 3-1 game.
"I was just trying to get a pitch up, they had been attacking me with breaking balls that at-bat," said Semien. "I wanted one a little higher up and eventually I saw one."
Matt Lindstrom gave up a leadoff walk to Welington Castillo to start the home 12th, but then got Nate Schierholtz to hit into a double play. Mike Olt followed with a single, but Lindstrom struck out Luis Valbuena for his fifth save of the season.
The White Sox jumped on top in the first inning as De Aza singled to start the frame, moved to third on an Olt error off a Gordon Beckham grounder, and came home thanks to Abreu's sac fly.
Quintana retired the first 14 batters he faced before giving up a walk to Schierholtz with two outs in the fifth. Schierholtz stole second and Olt worked a walk, but Darwin Barney grounded out to end the frame.
The Cubs got their first hit of the game in the sixth as Samardzija led off with a double and moved to third on Emilio Bonifacio's sac bunt. Lake then brought home Samardzija with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
