Gillaspie's grand slam powers White Sox past Blue Jays
Aug 17, 2014 - 11:23 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Conor Gillaspie's grand slam powered the Chicago White Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the rubber match of a three-game set on Sunday.Jordan Danks hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBI, while Alejandro De Aza had two hits and a run scored for the White Sox, who have won five of their last six games against the Blue Jays.
"I felt like we did a good job during the whole game of competing out there and grinding out at-bats," said Gillaspie. "That ended up being the key in the first inning."
Scott Carroll (5-7) earned the win despite giving up five runs on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts across 5 2/3 innings.
Jose Reyes went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Edwin Encarnacion stroked a two-run shot for Toronto, which has dropped five of its last six.
"We've had some of the right guys up at the right times, but we just couldn't cash in that big one," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons.
Starter Drew Hutchison (8-11) allowed seven runs on eight hits and three walks over seven frames in defeat.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the first. Reyes led off the frame with a double to right and moved to third on Melky Cabrera's sacrifice bunt.
Jose Bautista's grounder was fielded by first baseman Jose Abreu, whose throw home reached catcher Adrian Nieto in time. Reyes jumped over Nieto and was tagged out after failing to touch the plate. After an umpire's review, the out call was overturned with the ruling being that Nieto blocked the plate.
In the home half, De Aza hit a leadoff single and Adam Dunn and Avisail Garcia both worked two-out walks to load the bases. Gillaspie then crushed a fastball over the wall in right center field for a grand slam.
Gordon Beckham kept the rally going with a single to left and Danks homered to left-center field made it a 6-1 game.
Josh Thole's walk led off the fifth for Toronto ,and Reyes and Cabrera both singled to load the bases with no outs. Thole scored when Bautista grounded into a double play and Encarnacion followed with a two-run blast to left, getting the Blue Jays within two runs.
Colby Rasmus opened the sixth with a single to left and Juan Francisco doubled to right. Dioner Navarro then greeted Daniel Webb with an RBI single to right, making it a 6-5 ball game.
Danks' sac fly to deep left plated Gillaspie for a 7-5 score in the home half.
Zach Putnam tossed a scoreless eighth for Chicago and Jake Petricka worked around a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to secure his ninth save of the season.
Pinch-hitter Nolan Reimold grounded out to second to end the game.
