Fister carries Nationals over Reds
Jul 28, 2014 - 3:33 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Doug Fister tossed seven scoreless innings while Adam LaRoche drove in two runs, as Washington held on late to post a 4-2 victory over Cincinnati in Sunday's rubber match of a three-game series.Fister (10-2) surrendered just three hits and one walk, fanning five over his productive effort, his first scoreless start since June 21. After Aaron Barrett encountered trouble, Rafael Soriano recorded the final three outs to post his 25th save.
Anthony Rendon and Jayson Werth added an RBI each for the Nationals, winners in eight of their last 11 overall.
Mat Latos (2-3) was tagged for three runs on as many hits, walking four and fanning six for the Reds, losers in eight of their last nine.
"We have to get our guys feeling good about what they're doing again offensively," said Reds manager Bryan Price. "We had a real good approach going into the break, but it hasn't been quite as good. They're are working hard. Guys care."
Barrett allowed back-to-back singles by Todd Frazier and Jay Bruce to begin the ninth, then Soriano entered only to give up a two-run double from Devin Mesoraco, which cut the lead to 4-2.
Soriano recovered from there, fanning Jack Hannahan swinging, inducing a groundout from Donald Lutz and a game-ending fly out by pinch-hitter Chris Heisey.
Washington picked up the game's first runs, all coming with two outs, in the fifth. Danny Espinosa's single, a walk to Denard Span and Rendon hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, preceding a Werth walk and two-run single by LaRoche.
The Nationals padded their lead in the ninth, again with two outs. Pinch- hitter Nate McLouth reached on a Skip Schumaker throwing error and advanced on a passed ball before Span walked. Rendon laced a single into left which brought in McLouth to make it 4-0.
Game Notes
Span walked four times ... Both clubs are in action on Monday, as the Nationals head to Miami for the first of three and the Reds host Arizona to kick off a three-game set ... Prior to the contest, Cincinnati activated Hannahan from the 60-day disabled list and optioned pitcher Curtis Partch to Triple-A Louisville to make room on the roster.
