Billy Butler also had an RBI for the AL Central-leading Royals, who increased their lead over the Detroit Tigers to 1 1/2 games.

Jason Vargas (11-7) pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings to snap a two-start losing streak, giving up six hits and no walks while striking out five.

"He was sharp tonight, had his good command," said Royals manager Ned Yost. "Just pitched a great game."

"I grew up a Royals fan but it's just another team now," Tepesch said. "Just another team to beat. It was exciting. It's the first time I got to pitch here."

The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning after Omar Infante led off with a single and Gordon followed with a blast to center field for his 19th homer of the season.

Gordon had four home runs and eight RBI on the Royals' 5-4 homestand.

Salvador Perez led off the seventh inning with a double for Kansas City and scored on Butler's double down the left-field line.
