Angels hold on to beat Rays
Aug 2, 2014 - 6:05 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Trout hit a two-run homer, Huston Street overcame a shaky ninth inning and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim posted a 5-3 win over a Tampa Bay Rays club that began the post-David Price era.Josh Hamilton added a solo blast for the Angels before leaving with a bruised finger after being hit by a pitch.
Matt Shoemaker (9-3) needed 96 pitches to get through five innings, but picked up the win after allowing three runs -- two earned -- on eight hits.
Street, the fourth Angels reliever, pitched through a no-out, bases-loaded jam to earn his fifth save with his new club.
"It was only a matter of time we started putting some good at-bats together," said Trout. "It was a good win tonight, for sure."
After Cole Figueroa led off with a single, pinch-hitter Brandon Guyer walked and beat a throw to second on a chopper to short. Street, however, struck out Desmond Jennings and Ben Zobrist swinging before Matt Joyce flied out to center for the final out.
Evan Longoria had two hits and an RBI for the Rays, who sent Price to Detroit in a three-team deal Thursday.
Jeremy Hellickson (0-1) gave up four runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings in Tampa Bay's second straight loss and third in five games on the heels of winning nine straight.
The Angels needed 13 innings to produce a run on Thursday. It didn't take them long to score Friday night as they put up a three-spot in the first inning.
Hellickson walked Kole Calhoun to begin the game and then served up Trout's line-drive homer to left field. Albert Pujols followed with a double and came around on Erick Aybar's one-out single to center. Aybar was tagged out trying to advance to second.
"First of all, you want to get strike one there and not walk the guy," said Hellickson of the first at-bat to Calhoun. "Especially the guys he has coming up after him."
The Rays' James Loney led off the bottom of the second with a drive off the top of the right-field wall. A review upheld the double for Loney, who moved to third on a Yunel Escobar infield single and scored on Figueroa's sacrifice fly to center.
Hamilton made it 4-1 in the third with a two-out homer down the right-field line.
Tampa Bay closed to within 4-3 in the fifth. Zobrist hit a two-out single and Joyce doubled before Longoria reached on a infield single to third base, plating Zobrist. The throw from David Freese got past the first baseman Pujols, allowing Joyce to score. Longoria then collided with first base umpire Larry Vanover and was thrown out trying to go to second.
Chris Iannetta's second double of the game drove in J.B. Shuck to make it 5-3 in the sixth.
