Dodgers spoil Hamels' season debut
Apr 24, 2014 - 6:27 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Zack Greinke tossed seven-plus brilliant innings to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the third installment of a four-game set.Greinke (4-0) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out 11 to remain unbeaten through five outings.
"It wasn't like everything was incredible, but I could use anything in or away at any time," Greinke said. "For the most part, throughout my whole career, I've had at least two pitches. There have been very few games where I don't have two pitches working, and usually there's three."
Yasiel Puig was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, Hanley Ramirez hit a solo homer and Juan Uribe added an RBI for the Dodgers, who had dropped the first two tilts of this series. Matt Kemp was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored in the win.
Kenley Jansen worked a perfect ninth to earn his eighth save of the season.
Ryan Howard drove in a run and Jayson Nix smacked a solo homer for the Phillies, who had a season-high three-game winning streak snapped.
Phillies lefty Cole Hamels (0-1) made his season debut after missing time with biceps tendinitis and a fatigued arm. The 2008 World Series MVP appeared sharp in his return, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings. Hamels struck out five and walked one in the setback.
"I knew what I was going into. It was just a matter of preparing myself just like I normally have and getting ready in a spring training-type setting. It was just a couple of weeks later than everybody else," Hamels said.
Los Angeles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second. Kemp doubled and moved to third on Scott Van Slyke's base hit to left. Uribe then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kemp.
The Phillies knotted things up in the fourth, when Jimmy Rollins doubled and scored on Howard's line-drive base hit to left.
Puig's RBI single in the fifth put the Dodgers back ahead. With two outs, Drew Butera singled ahead of a Greinke walk before Puig ripped a base hit through the hole on the left side.
Puig added another RBI in the seventh inning. Greinke doubled off reliever Jeff Manship with two outs, and Puig tripled off the wall in right to push his pitcher across.
Nix, who came into the game in the seventh as part of a double switch, smacked the first pitch he saw in the eighth over the center-field wall for a leadoff homer that made it 3-2, but the Dodgers added a pair of runs in the home half to seal the win.
Ramirez clobbered a leadoff homer to center to make it a two-run contest. After Van Slyke doubled down the line in right and was pushed to third on a Uribe groundout, Justin Turner followed with an RBI single to account for the final difference.
