Marlins use five-run 8th to top Pirates
Aug 6, 2014 - 4:22 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarrod Saltalamacchia worked a go-ahead, bases-loaded walk and the Miami Marlins used a five-run eighth inning to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-3, in the opener of a three-game set on Tuesday.Marcell Ozuna drove in two runs, Giancarlo Stanton finished 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored and Adeiny Hechavarria supplied two hits and an RBI for Miami, which snapped a string of six straight losses at PNC Park.
"We certainly were able to zone it up and be patient at a time right when we needed it," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "We had some great at-bats."
A.J. Ramos (5-0) earned the win after retiring the final two batters in the seventh inning. Starter Brad Hand allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings of work.
Jordy Mercer and Chris Stewart each had two hits and an RBI and Gregory Polanco also drove in a run for the Pirates, who have dropped two in a row.
Jared Hughes (6-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs -- one earned -- and a walk, while recording just one out in the eighth. Starter Charlie Morton gave up just one run on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts over seven frames.
The Marlins went ahead in the eighth. Hughes walked Stanton and Casey McGehee reached on Josh Harrison's error at third. Pinch-hitter Jeff Baker singled to right off Justin Wilson to load the bases with one out and Ozuna worked an eight-pitch walk to usher in the game-tying run. Saltalamacchia also took a walk, making it a 3-2 game.
Jeanmar Gomez took the mound and didn't fare any better. Hechavarria welcomed him with an RBI single to left and Reed Johnson grounded into a force out at second that brought in another run. Christian Yelich capped the barrage with a ground-rule double to left for a 6-2 lead.
"We just didn't meet the demands of the game in the eighth inning," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "We just didn't get the things that we needed to get done with a one-run lead."
Stewart's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth accounted for the final score.
The Pirates opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Starling Marte hit a two-out single and came home on Mercer's RBI double to the right-field corner.
Miami quickly responded in the fourth with Ozuna's RBI double down the left- field line. Garrett Jones, who reached on a one-out single, was safe at home after Stewart couldn't hold on to the relay throw from Mercer. Ozuna reached third on the play, but was left stranded after Hechavarria grounded into a double play.
Neil Walker took a leadoff walk to open the seventh and moved to second on Jayson Nix's sacrifice bunt. Polanco's grounder trickled into left for an RBI single, giving the Pirates a 2-1 lead.
