Cano, Mariners rout Rangers

Sep 5, 2014 - 6:17 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Robinson Cano went 2-for-4 with four RBI as the Seattle Mariners crushed the Texas Rangers, 10-2, in the opener of a four-game series.

The Mariners used a six-run second inning to claim a commanding lead early on. After Rangers starter Robbie Ross retired the first two batters in the inning, a walk to Chris Denorfia spelled trouble for the young lefty.

Ross (2-6) proceeded to walk Chris Taylor and give up back-to-back RBI singles to Jesus Sucre and Austin Jackson. Dustin Ackley then drew a walk and Cano plated two with his single up the middle. Kendrys Morales singled home Ackley, and Ross was pulled from the game.

"That's the bad part, or frustrating part, having the outing that I had in Houston and then having this happen," Ross said. "It's one of those games where I can look back and see where I could have done some things different."

Kyle Seager, who led off the frame by flying out to right, plated Cano with a single to center against reliever Jon Edwards.

Ross, who was not scheduled to start but took the mound because Scott Baker had a stiff neck, was charged with all six runs on five hits. He fell to 0-6 in his last nine starts since beating the Mariners on April 15.

Roenis Elias (10-12) allowed a run in five innings for the Mariners to end a stretch of three straight losses.

"You stay around by your starters," said Cano. "That's why we are where we are. You got guys that prepare themselves for every five days and give the best chance for us."

Edwards never settled down in the third inning, issuing walks to Denorfia and Taylor, and Sucre made it 7-0 with an RBI single to left. Later in the inning, Cano doubled in two more runs off Michael Kirkman.

Alex Rios put Texas on the board in the bottom of the third. Michael Choice led off with a single, moved to second on an Elvis Andrus base hit and scored when Rios singled to center.

Denorfia hit a solo home run in the seventh to make it 10-1, and Rougned Odor capped the scoring in the ninth with his solo shot.

Game Notes

Seager extended his hit streak to nine games ... Denorfia scored three runs ... Seattle has a winning record this season against every AL West opponent besides Texas. The Mariners trail the season series, 9-7 ... Andrus had three hits for Texas.
