Rangers shut the door on Athletics
Apr 8, 2015 - 6:24 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Prince Fielder went 2-of-3 and drove in two runs, and Neftali Feliz shut the door in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Texas Rangers picked up their first victory of the season with a 3-1 road conquest over the Oakland Athletics.Colby Lewis (1-0) got the start for Texas and pitched six innings, giving up three hits and a run with four strikeouts.
"It felt good," Fielder said. "It was a lot of fun getting that first win and getting (Texas manager Jeff Bannister) his first win."
Eric Sogard recorded the only RBI of the game for Oakland, which dominated Texas Monday in the season opener to the tune of an 8-0 shutout.
Jesse Hahn (0-1) got his first start in an Athletics uniform after coming over from San Diego in the offseason in a trade. Hahn was tagged with the loss after lasting six innings, giving up seven hits with three runs and three strikeouts.
"I thought he pitched well; he didn't walk anybody," Athletics manager Bob Melvin said. "He was throwing strikes."
The Rangers limited the A's to five hits in the contest. Each team was charged with one error as well.
Texas struck first in the top half of the third inning when Fielder poked a low and outside pitch by Hahn to shallow center field, just out of the reach of the outstretched Marcus Semien's glove.
Rougned Odor, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, came around from second to put the Rangers up. Adrian Beltre grounded out to end the inning, stranding Fielder on base.
After Leonys Martin singled to center in the top half of the fifth and Elvis Andrus singled to left, Fielder struck again.
The first baseman ripped a grounder to Craig Gentry in right field. Gentry misplayed the ball, which caromed off his glove and rolled away. Martin and Andrus scored, and Fielder advanced to second on the fielding error.
Oakland finally got on the board in the home half of the sixth inning. Sam Fuld tripled to right field and was able to make his way home when Sogard grounded out to shortstop.
Hahn was replaced on the mound at the start of the seventh inning by Eric O'Flaherty. Flaherty gave up a single to Andrus in the inning but got out unscathed.
It was Lewis's turn to be pulled in the seventh. The Texas starter was relieved by Keone Kela, who was making his major league debut.
Kela allowed a single to Billy Butler to lead off the inning and proceeded to load the bases with just one out. But Kela was saved when Semien grounded into a double play, getting out of the jam without allowing a single run.
That was Oakland's last true scoring threat of the night. Feliz would have retired the side in the ninth, but a fielding error on Andrus allowed the A's their final base runner. Brett Lawrie struck out to end the game one batter later.
Game Notes
