Ozuna, Haren help Marlins beat Giants
May 8, 2015 - 5:11 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run homer to back a solid outing from Dan Haren and the Miami Marlins claimed the first game of a four-game set against the San Francisco Giants with a 7-2 win on Thursday night.Haren (4-1), who had two RBI to help his own cause, permitted two runs on eight hits over seven innings of work for Miami, which had lost three of its last four.
Giancarlo Stanton drove in two runs and Dee Gordon had an RBI in the win.
"We came out really relaxed today after a long night of travel," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "Our guys really like playing here for whatever reason."
Tim Hudson (1-3) did not fare too well in this one, and neither did his WHIP. Hudson was dealt the loss after surrendering six runs on a career-high 15 hits over 6 2/3 frames. He allowed the most hits by a Giants pitcher since Gaylord Perry on Sept. 28, 1968 against Cincinnati.
"(Miami) has been swinging the bat well... Hudson left some pitches up," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Really, Haren was the one that killed us."
San Francisco has dropped two straight since a five-game winning streak.
Miami opened things up with a three-run second inning, with Haren dealing a clutch hit. Michael Morse singled with one out and Adeiny Hechavarria put runners at the corners with a sharp single out to right two batters later. Haren then slapped a double to center that plated the two and Gordon followed with a double into the left-field corner for a 3-0 lead.
Stanton delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth to increase the cushion and Ozuna poked his first homer of the season with Martin Prado on base to make it 6-0 in the seventh.
San Francisco got two back in the home seventh, however, on a sac fly by Justin Maxwell and an RBI double from Matt Duffy.
Stanton brought Gordon home in the ninth to account for the final margin.
Game Notes
Morse received his 2014 World Series championship ring in a ceremony prior to the game ... Miami finished with 17 hits compared to nine for the Giants ... The Marlins went 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
