Cubs complete 1st 4-game sweep of Mets at Wrigley since '92
May 14, 2015 - 11:15 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Dexter Fowler scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the seventh inning, and the Chicago Cubs completed their first four-game sweep of the New York Mets at Wrigley Field in 23 years with a 6-5 win on Thursday.Fowler went 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk and three runs scored for the Cubs, erased a 5-1 deficit with a four-run rally in the fifth.
"Really proud of the way we are playing, up and down the lineup," said Chicago's Joe Maddon, who earned his 800th career managerial win.
New York's Anthony Recker had the first multi-home run game of his career, but it was his passed ball that allowed Fowler to score what proved to be the decisive run.
The four-game slide is the longest of the season for the Mets, who have gone 5-10 following their 15-5 start.
John Mayberry Jr. snapped an 0-for-21 slump with a two-run single in the fifth that gave the Mets a 5-1 lead, but Chicago tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
Matt Szczur hit an RBI double and eventually scored on a throwing error by shortstop Wilmer Flores to bring the Cubs within 5-3.
"We got to make the play," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "In any game, you got to make plays, and we didn't make it."
After New York starting pitcher Jon Niese (3-3) walked Fowler on four pitches, Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant hit consecutive run-scoring singles.
Niese bounced back with a 1-2-3 sixth, but was removed with one out in the seventh after giving up a single to Fowler and hitting Rizzo a second time. Fowler advanced to third base on a flyout and scored when Recker mishandled a pitch thrown by reliever Hansel Robles.
Pedro Strop (1-2) tossed a perfect eighth for Chicago, and Hector Rondon struck out Dilson Herrera with the potential tying run at third to close out the ninth. Rondon picked up his eighth save of the season.
Recker opened the scoring in the second with a solo blast off Chicago starter Travis Wood, then Flores and Recker hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth to put New York up 3-0.
Fowler homered to lead off the home half of the fourth.
