Schumaker helps Reds snap 9-game skid
May 27, 2015 - 5:21 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Skip Schumaker's pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rockies in the second of a three-game set.Cincinnati was able to snap a nine-game losing streak as Marlon Byrd led off with a walk, moved to second on Kristopher Negron's sacrifice bunt and came home on Schumaker's single to left.
"We needed a win," said Schumaker. "I don't care how it happened, we just needed to smile for once around here."
Billy Hamilton drove in the other run while Aroldis Chapman (3-3) picked up the win for a scoreless inning of relief for the Reds, who got seven innings out of starter Michael Lorenzen as he allowed a run on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Nick Hundley hit a solo home run for the Rockies, who had a three-game winning streak broken. Chris Rusin gave up a run on four hits over seven innings, while Brooks Brown (0-2) allowed the winning run in the ninth.
"Rusin was outstanding," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "Good fastball with late movement. Threw his secondary stuff for strikes. He was in control, all the way."
The Reds worked a run across in the second when Byrd led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lorenzen and came home when Hamilton singled to right.
Colorado tied it in the fifth, though, as Hundley homered to left with two outs, his fifth of the year.
