D-backs take down Mets

Jun 6, 2015 - 4:51 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. Pollock went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to help the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 7-2 win over the New York Mets on Friday night.

Paul Goldschmidt and Yasmany Tomas each drove in a run in a pivotal sixth inning that gave the D-backs the lead for good.

Arizona dropped the opener of this four-game set on Thursday.

Jeremy Hellickson (4-3) was solid on the bump in the win, tossing six innings and allowing two runs while striking out six.

"He did a good job," D-backs manager Chip Hale said of Hellickson. "He threw a lot of pitches but got us through six. He did a nice job of battling and keeping us in the game."

Jon Niese (3-6) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs with eight strikeouts over six innings of work.

"I thought he threw the ball well," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "We just couldn't give him any runs to work with."

Michael Cuddyer opened the scoring in the second with a solo homer to left, then Arizona tied it in the third on Pollock's infield single that scored Nick Ahmed.

New York regained the lead in the fourth. Wilmer Flores reached on a one-out double and Juan Lagares followed with a base hit to center that put runners at the corners. Eric Campbell gave the Mets a 2-1 lead by sending a grounder right back up the box for an RBI knock that scored Flores.

Hellickson walked his counterpart Niese to load the bases later in the fourth, but Curtis Granderson went down swinging to end the inning.

Niese settled in from Pollock's RBI hit in the third, retiring eight straight, but the latter doubled and scored on Goldschmidt's single to center in the sixth. Tomas followed with a double into the left-field corner that plated Goldschmidt all the way from first for a 3-2 lead.

Arizona's bullpen took over for Hellickson from there, with Andrew Chafin pitching a scoreless seventh and Daniel Hudson doing the same in the eighth.

The D-backs added plenty of insurance with four in the home eighth. Ender Inciarte tripled to begin the frame and scored on Pollock's double. Aaron Hill brought Pollock in later in the frame with a single and Chris Owings followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a four-run edge. David Peralta bolted home on a wild pitch by Erik Goeddel to account for the final margin.
