Reds finally solve Hamels, beat Phillies

Jun 9, 2015 - 5:15 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Ivan De Jesus Jr. launched a two-run homer in the sixth inning to propel the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-4 win over Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.

Zack Cozart went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBI and two runs scored for the Reds. Todd Frazier also had three hits with an RBI and a run scored.

Cincinnati starter Mike Leake (3-4) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on 10 hits over six innings.

Carlos Ruiz drove in two runs and scored a run for the Phillies, who have lost four of five.

Hamels (5-5) lost to the Reds for the first time in his career. The left- hander allowed five runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over six innings.

The 31-year-old Hamels entered Monday's game with a 9-0 record in 13 regular- season starts against Cincinnati. He also tossed a shutout against the Reds in Game 3 of the 2010 NLCS.

De Jesus broke a 3-3 tie with his first big league home run. Cozart hit a leadoff single ahead of De Jesus' blast to left.

"It was really special," De Jesus said of his memorable blast.

Cozart led off the eighth with a homer to make it 6-3. Ruiz scored on a wild pitch in the ninth to account for the final margin.

Each team scored a run in the first. Ben Revere led off the game with a double and raced home on Ryan Howard's two-out double to right-center field.

Brandon Phillips crossed the plate in the bottom half. He singled, moved to second when Joey Votto walked and scored on Frazier's single to left-center field.

Billy Hamilton used his speed to score in the second. Following a two-out single, Hamilton stole second and third before taking off for home on a fielder's choice.

Ruiz apparently thought Phillips struck out on a full-count pitch in the dirt, and he threw to first to complete the out. Instead, it was ball four, and Hamilton scored easily on the throw.

"With a guy like Hamilton on the bases you really have to be alert," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said.

The Reds tacked on another run in the third, as Frazier singled and scored on Cozart's double to left.

The Phillies used a two-run fourth to tie things up. Maikel Franco doubled and moved to third on Cody Asche's single, but got caught in a rundown on Freddy Galvis' grounder to first. A passed ball put runners on second and third for Ruiz, who knocked in both with a single to right-center field.

Philadelphia failed to score after loading the bases with one out in the sixth. Hamels struck out swinging and Revere grounded out to keep the score tied.
