Seager's grand slam leads M's over Indians

Jun 11, 2015 - 2:56 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Seager's grand slam led the Seattle Mariners to a 9-3 win over the Cleveland Indians Wednesday.

After three walks by Trevor Bauer (5-3) loaded the bases in the third, Seager's home run barely cleared the yellow line at the top of the right-field wall to give Seattle a 4-0 edge.

Bauer allowed six runs and five walks in 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He entered the game having won three of his previous four starts with the loss coming at Seattle on May 29.

"He's a good pitcher, and he just didn't have his best stuff," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon.

Taijuan Walker (3-6) tossed his third straight quality start, allowing a run on eight hits in six innings with six strikeouts. Against Bauer on May 29, he fired eight scoreless innings for the best start in his young career.

"We had hits," said Cleveland manager Terry Francona. "We got those chances, and we just didn't cash in."

Bauer retired eight of the first 10 batters he faced before completely losing control. A wild pitch moved Mike Zunino to second base, and consecutive walks to Austin Jackson and Robinson Cano loaded the bases for Seager. In a 1-1 count, Seager hit a towering fly ball that chased Brandon Moss to the wall, but he ran out of room.

Dustin Ackley led off the fourth with a single, and Bauer issued another walk, this time to Brad Miller with one out. Logan Morrison then doubled in both runners to extend Seattle's lead to 6-0.

Cleveland got on the board in its half of the fourth. Back-to-back singles from David Murphy and Yan Gomes started the inning. After Zach Walters struck out, Seattle tried turning two on a ground ball by Michael Bourn, but Walker could not secure the catch at first to complete the twin killing, allowing Murphy to score.

The Mariners tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh. Seager's double scored Cano, who reached base on an error. Seth Smith followed with a run-scoring double that was just feet short of a home run, and he scored on Mark Trumbo's long single.

Seattle then conceded a run to Cleveland in the eighth on Walters' groundout.

Fernando Rodney, who was removed from the closer's role in favor of Carson Smith, came on to work the ninth for the Mariners. After two Cleveland hits opened the inning, Giovanny Urshela's groundout scored Mike Aviles before Moss' pop-up in foul territory ended the game.

Bauer had pitched six-plus innings in five straight starts ... Seattle had not scored more than three runs since May 26 when it beat Tampa Bay 7-6 ... Seattle's Nelson Cruz, the AL leader in home runs, was out of the lineup for the first time this season due to back spasms ... Jason Kipnis' ninth-inning double gave him a hit in 20 straight home games, the longest streak for an Indian at Progressive Field ... Seattle sends J.A.
