Gordon's speed powers Marlins over Giants

Jul 1, 2015 - 4:03 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - With just four homers in 402 career games coming into Tuesday, Dee Gordon capitalized on a chance to add to his total without having the ball leave Marlins Park.

Gordon sped around the bases in the second inning for a three-run inside-the- park homer to help Miami edge the San Francisco Giants, 5-3, in the opener of a three-game series.

Justin Bour went deep off Ryan Vogelsong the following inning, as the Marlins won for just the second time in their last eight games.

Mat Latos (3-5) surrendered six hits and three runs -- two earned -- over six innings to earn the victory.

Buster Posey homered and Brandon Belt added an RBI single for the Giants, who came into this series winners in seven of 10 games.

Vogelsong (6-6) was charged with seven hits and four runs over six frames, with the big blow coming in the second.

Belt's single plated Joe Panik in the opening inning, but Derek Dietrich and J.T. Realmuto singled to start the home second. With two outs and both runners in scoring position, Gordon hit a liner to the gap. Right fielder Gregor Blanco tried unsuccessfully to flip the ball using only his glove to center fielder Angel Pagan. By the time the ball was into the infield, Gordon was sliding head-first into home plate to complete his 14-second journey around the bases for his first homer of the year.

"It was a thing of beauty. He had a great swing on the ball and split the gap perfect. It was much needed at that time," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said.

Posey homered to left-center in the third.

"I feel good and I'm just trying to keep it simple," Posey said.

Bour countered with an upper deck blast to right field.

Posey scored on a Latos wild pitch in the sixth.

Panik struck out swinging to strand two men on base in the seventh and Carter Capps fanned the side in the top of the eighth.

A sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Miguel Rojas provided some insurance in the eighth. Rojas then made a sparkling defensive play in the ninth, barehanding a grounder tight to the line at third by Andrew Susac and throwing across the diamond. Bour made a great stretch play at first to record the out. A.J. Ramos then completed his one-inning stint by retiring Blanco on a grounder to notch his 11th save.
