Marlins rip Nationals behind Koehler, Stanton

Apr 16, 2014 - 4:21 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Tom Koehler tossed seven scoreless innings, while Giancarlo Stanton finished 2-for-4 with a three-run blast and drove in five runs as Miami battered Washington, 11-2, in the middle test of a three- game series.

Casey McGehee added three hits and two RBI, with Marcell Ozuna going 4-for-5 with a run driven in and three scored for the Marlins, who shook off a 9-2 loss in Monday's opener.

"We saw the entire team step up. We feel like our lineup can do a lot of damage, and I think you saw that tonight," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.

Koehler (2-1) issued five walks, but fanned three and allowed one hit to complement an offense which set a new season high for runs scored.

Zach Walters homered for the Nationals, who have dropped four of their last five.

Stephen Strasburg (1-2) exited after four full frames, having given up eight hits and six runs along with three walks and five strikeouts.

"It was one of those days where it seemed like every pitch I threw, they hit it," Strasburg said.

The Marlins made it a long night for Strasburg right from the start. Christian Yelich and Ozuna began the home first with singles and Stanton followed with a three-run blast.

The Marlins went up 6-0 in the second, as Adeiny Hechavarria led off with a triple and scored on a one-out infield single from Ozuna. Later in the frame, as the bases were loaded with two down, McGehee added a two-run single.

Miami greeted Craig Stammen in the fifth with five more runs.

Derek Dietrich singled and Hechavarria walked with one down before Stammen airmailed a throw on Koehler's attempted sacrifice which scored both runners. Koehler ended up being thrown out trying to reach third, but Yelich singled, Ozuna singled and Stanton doubled home both for a 10-0 game. Garrett Jones followed with an RBI base hit.

Washington managed to get on the board in the eighth. Bryce Harper hit a two- out single, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a Steven Souza single compounded by an Ozuna throwing error.

Walters kicked off the ninth with a shot to right, his first career homer, to cap the scoring.

Game Notes

Stanton's five RBI tied a career high, which was first accomplished on Sept. 30, 2010 against the Pirates ... Yelich collected two hits and scored twice and Stanton added three runs scored ... Miami bested its previous high of 10 runs, which occurred in a season-opening 10-1 victory over Colorado on March 31.
