Lee hopes to stay hot as Phillies battle D'backs
Apr 26, 2014 - 3:12 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee has put together two very impressive starts in a row.The same can't be said for Arizona's Bronson Arroyo.
Lee looks to build off a scoreless outing on Saturday night as the Phillies battle the Diamondbacks in the continuation of a three-game series.
The left-handed Lee has put a rough start behind him and has been very solid over his last two outings. He struck out 13 batters and gave up just one run despite 11 hits on April 16 versus the Braves, though he did suffer a 1-0 complete-game loss for his second setback in a row.
Lee shook off the tough luck on Monday to hold the Los Angeles Dodgers scoreless for eighth innings of a 7-0 win, scattering four hits while fanning 10 without a walk. He retired 20 straight at one point.
The 35-year-old has given up just four runs in four starts since yielding eight in a season-opening win versus Texas on March 31 and improved to 3-2 with a 3.09 earned run average on the season.
Lee, who has 38 strikeouts to just two walks in 35 innings this year, is 4-1 lifetime versus Arizona with a 2.93 ERA.
Arroyo, meanwhile, has struggled in consecutive losses, giving up nine runs, 10 hits and a walk in only 3 1/3 innings of a 9-0 setback to the New York Mets on April 15. He followed up by allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks in 5 1/3 frames of a 5-1 defeat to the Chicago Cubs on Monday. That soured his longest start of the young season.
The 37-year-old righty is 1-2 with a 9.50 ERA on the year and things may not get any better tonight as he is 4-7 lifetime against Philadelphia with a 5.35 ERA.
Arizona picked up a 5-4 victory in last night's opener as Aaron Hill hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, while A.J. Pollock also went deep and Paul Goldschmidt had an RBI.
Josh Collmenter picked up his first win of the season after scattering four hits over six scoreless innings. He fanned five without issuing a walk.
"As a starting rotation, you take pride in being able to go out there and give the team a chance to win and then hand the ball to the next guy," Collmenter said. "We've gotten some quality efforts the last few times out so we're hoping that that can continue."
Addison Reed notched his sixth save of the season despite allowing a run in the ninth inning as Arizona picked up its third straight win.
Jimmy Rollins, Cody Asche and Tony Gwynn Jr. all had an RBI for the Phillies, who had won four of five coming in.
"I think he was tough to pick up the first couple at-bats for the players," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of Collmenter. "He was moving it around. He had movement on his fastball."
Roberto Hernandez allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings to absorb the loss.
Arizona went 3-4 against Philadelphia last season after going 2-4 in 2012.
