Rockies shoot for series win over Dodgers
Apr 26, 2014 - 3:13 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rockies try to lock up a series victory over the rival Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night when the NL West clubs resume a three-game series.Charlie Blackmon's RBI single in the 11th inning on Friday night sparked a three-run frame that resulted in a 5-4 victory over the Dodgers. The insurance provided after Blackmon's hit was big as reliever LaTroy Hawkins gave up a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to Adrian Gonzalez with no outs, but then retired the next three batters to earn his seventh save.
Troy Tulowitzki and Corey Dickerson added solo homers earlier in the game for Colorado, which has won six of eight.
Colorado starter Jordan Lyles pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in the no-decision.
"It's tough to win extra-inning games on the road," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "Jordan (Lyles) gave us every opportunity to win this game. He had a good two-seam and cutter and pitched to both sides of the plate. You have to make big plays to win on the road so tonight was a big one."
Yasiel Puig homered and knocked in two runs for the Dodgers, who saw starter Josh Beckett hurl eight innings and surrender two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
Despite the home runs and a great effort from Beckett, the Dodgers lost for the fourth time in five games.
"Josh (Beckett) was good again," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "We are happy the way he's progressing. We are still continuing to have trouble scoring runs."
Mattingly may need his club to fix those scoring issues in a hurry as Paul Maholm will get the start tonight but is just 1-8 lifetime versus the Rockies with a 6.63 earned run average in 10 starts.
The 31-year-old southpaw is coming off a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday as he was charged with five runs (4 earned) on eight hits and three walks over five innings of a 7-0 loss.
"It was frustrating just going through a long first inning, battling, not having your stuff, and doing everything possible to get deep into the game," Maholm said.
Maholm fell to 0-2 on the year with a 5.60 ERA in six games, with three starts.
Juan Nicasio counters for the Rockies and struggled in a no-decision versus the Phillies on Sunday. The righty allowed five runs, all but one earned, on seven hits and a walk over five frames. He was hurt by two homers, but remained unbeaten on the season at 2-0 with a 4.30 ERA.
The 27-year-old is 3-2 in his career versus the Dodgers with a 3.67 ERA.
The Rockies held a slim 10-9 advantage over the Dodgers in last season's series, winning six of 10 in Los Angeles.
