Giants try to sweep Indians out of San Francisco

Apr 27, 2014 - 2:38 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants shoot for their second straight three-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians as the clubs wrap a three-game series on Sunday afternoon.

The Giants took all three meetings at home in the previous encounter between the squads, a set on June 24-26, 2011. San Francisco has now won seven of its last eight versus Cleveland after taking the first two encounters of this series.

San Francisco trailed by three runs on Saturday before a four-run fifth frame sparked a 5-3 victory. Hunter Pence drove in two runs during the inning, while Buster Posey homered in the game and both Angel Pagan and Gregor Blanco drove in runs.

The Giants won their third game in a row despite starter Tim Lincecum lasting only 4 2/3 innings, charged with three runs -- two earned -- on nine hits.

"I didn't do a good job today," Lincecum lamented. "I guess being able to keep my team in it was the best positive of today."

Jason Kipnis drove in two and Nick Swisher had two doubles and an RBI for the Indians, who had won four of five prior to this series.

Cleveland starter Zach McAllister allowed one hit entering the fifth but was touched for all four runs in the inning, his final one of the outing.

"We had a chance to win today and it would have been nice for me to be able to get out there and get through that fifth and give us an even better chance but I wasn't able to do that," McAllister said. "It's part of the game."

Taking the mound today for the Indians will be Danny Salazar, who is still looking for his first victory of 2014.

The right-handed Salazar has dropped three starts in a row since beginning the season with a no-decision on April 4. On Tuesday versus Kansas City, he lasted just 4 1/3 innings and was charged with five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and two walks while fanning six.

Salazar does have 23 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings this year, but has also walked 10 while pitching to a 7.85 earned run average.

The 24-year-old has never faced the Giants.

Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong hopes to rebound from his shortest outing in a Giants uniform as he takes the mound today.

After not factoring into the decision of his first three starts, the 36-year- old lasted only 1 1/3 frames of an 8-2 setback to the Colorado Rockies on Monday. He yielded a career-high three homers and five runs in total.

Vogelsong, whose season ERA rose to 7.71, has faced the Indians only once before and not since 2003 while with Pittsburgh. In that outing, he yielded seven runs and 10 hits over five innings.
