Rockies eye another series win over Diamondbacks
Apr 29, 2014 - 2:52 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rockies shoot for their fourth straight series win when they play the middle contest of a three-game set Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. The Rockies haven't lost a series since dropping two of three at San Francisco from April 11-13 and took Monday's opener in Arizona by an 8-5 score. Troy Tulowitzki led off the sixth inning with a home run and Justin Morneau belted a two-run blast one batter later to snap a 4-4 tie.
Tulowitzki, who batted third for the first time this season, ended 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored, while Franklin Morales benefited from the big sixth inning for the win. Morales was reached for four runs and seven hits in five innings to push his record to 3-1.
"Franky struggled a little bit to get through five, high pitch count, didn't have his best command but put us in position to win that game," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Morales.
LaTroy Hawkins collected his eighth save with a scoreless ninth.
Weiss's club has scored five or more runs in seven of the last 10 games and leads the majors with a .295 batting average and 142 RBI. The Rockies are second in runs (148), homers (34) and a .353 on-base percentage.
Rockies starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood aims to rebound from a poor outing his last time out when he toes the rubber Tuesday. Chatwood allowed five runs and seven hits, including three home runs, in six innings of last Wednesday's 12-10 loss to the Giants. Chatwood did not record a decision and remained 1-0 through three starts with a 4.26 earned run average.
Chatwood will try to stay unbeaten in his career against the Diamondbacks and has a 2-0 mark in three games (2 starts) to go with a 3.65 ERA.
The Diamondbacks are an MLB-worst 8-21 this season and have lost three in a row and seven of their last 10 games.
In Monday's series opener with the Rockies, Wade Miley gave up the two home runs in the sixth inning and was reached for seven runs and 10 hits in six innings of work. Miley has allowed 10 runs in the last two games.
"I didn't get the job done," Miley admitted. "That one's on me."
Miley was 7-0 in 10 career games (9 starts) against Colorado.
Gerardo Parra went 3-for-4 with a home run, Martin Prado had two hits and three runs scored, and Paul Goldschmidt added three hits, an RBI and a run scored for the D'Backs. Miguel Montero posted a hit with two RBI and has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games. He has seven RBI in that time.
Mike Bolsinger earned his first major league win the last time out and the Diamondbacks will roll him out again Tuesday. Bolsinger allowed one unearned run and four hits across 6 2/3 innings in last Thursday's 5-2 road win against the Chicago Cubs.
Bolsinger struck out a career-high seven batters at Wrigley Field and was touched for seven runs -- six earned -- in an April 19 loss at Dodger Stadium. He is 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA in three games (2 starts) and will face the Rockies for the first time.
The right-hander was called up to replace Trevor Cahill in the rotation.
The Rockies opened their home schedule against Arizona earlier this month and won two out of three in that series.
