Angels rally to down Orioles
Jul 24, 2014 - 5:57 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kole Calhoun walked with the bases loaded to force in the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning, as the Angels rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles to avert a three-game sweep.Erick Aybar doubled in Josh Hamilton earlier in the eighth, helping Los Angeles to its 15th win in 19 home games. The Angels won despite leaving 11 men on base and going 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Jered Weaver (11-6) gave up six hits and a pair of runs, and struck out six in eight innings. He's 4-0 over his last seven starts and hasn't lost since June 16 at Cleveland.
"My fastball command was pretty good tonight. It sets up everything else," Weaver said. "I feel like I'm getting stronger."
Huston Street, who was acquired from San Diego Friday night, pitched the ninth for his first save in an Angels uniform and kept the team two games behind division-leading Oakland.
Josh Hamilton led off eighth and hit a broken-bat single beyond the shift in right field. Second baseman Jonathan Schoop was in the outfield, but got turned around and the ball fell in. Aybar hit the next pitch from Tommy Hunter (2-2) for a double to center and then stole third with one out. Hunter, who fanned Howie Kendrick and David Freese, intentionally walked Efren Navarro and then walked Chris Iannetta to fill the bases.
Lefty Brian Matusz was summoned from the bullpen, but walked the left-handed hitting Calhoun. Ryan Webb retired Mike Trout on a line drive to left to end the frame.
"I was looking for a pitch to hit and never really got it," Calhoun said. "I want to be in that situation. A hit would be awesome, but a walk was just as good."
Street walked Chris Davis with one out, but fanned J.J. Hardy and Schoop to end the game.
Chris Tillman gave up five hits over the first six innings for the AL East leaders, who were trying for their first three-game sweep in Anaheim since Aug. 27-29, 2010, but were victimized by the Angels' 31st come-from-behind win of the year.
"I felt good. It was a hit-and-miss tonight," Tillman said. "They have a good lineup. Weaver was really good tonight. You have to tip your cap."
Trout had an infield single in the first inning and scored on an Albert Pujols base hit off the wall in right field.
Ryan Flaherty hit a ground-rule double in the third and scored two batters later on a Nick Markakis ground single to right.
The Angels wasted a chance with men on second and third in the fifth and sixth.
The O's went ahead 2-1 in the sixth. David Lough singled, stole second and scored on an Adam Jones blooper off the end of his bat to right.
Game Notes
The Angels have won each of Weaver's last seven starts ... Hunter hadn't given up an earned run in his previous 12 appearances ... The Angels placed infielder Grant Green on the 15-day disabled list because of a lumbar strain. They replaced him on the roster by recalling first baseman C.J. Cron from Triple-A Salt Lake ... Manny Machado sat out his second straight game for the Orioles due to lower back spasms .. The Angels continue their stretch against division leaders Thursday by hosting the opener of a four-game set versus Detroit and then shift to Baltimore for three next week. Thursday's pitching matchup will be between 11-game winners Max Scherzer and Garrett Richards.
