White Sox, Tigers renew rivalry at Comerica Park

Jul 29, 2014 - 2:10 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - White Sox starter Jose Quintana has been dealing of late, and he'll look to stay dominant on Tuesday night when Chicago begins a three-game set with the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Opponents are hitting just .188 against Quintana over his last seven starts, and the left-hander boasts a 1.70 ERA during that span but only a 2-0 record to show for it. Most recently, he pitched seven innings of one-run ball against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, although the White Sox went on to lose, 2-1.

In 18 of 21 starts this season, Quintana has allowed three runs or fewer.

The Tigers will turn to Anibal Sanchez, who has been up and down of late. He got his seventh win of the season at Arizona on Wednesday despite allowing five runs on 11 hits over 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander has split four starts in the month of July.

Sanchez has stumbled in the middle innings in three of his past four starts.

"We've seen that a few times in his last few starts," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "It's possible some guys tire gradually as the game goes on and some guys, all of a sudden ... they hit a wall, lose a little bit of the oomph behind the ball."

The Tigers currently lead the American League Central by five games over Kansas City. However, they have lost eight of 12 and totaled only two runs during three straight losses to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim over the weekend.

The offense hit just .141 in those three games, and in Sunday's 2-1 loss, managed only one baserunner after the first inning.

"Teams go through offensive slumps," Ausmus said. "It happened early in the season, and it'll probably happen again during the season."

On Monday, the Tigers enjoyed their only off-day until Aug. 18.

On a positive note, Austin Jackson has heated up at the plate, batting .351 with 10 RBI in the month of July. However, he is only a career .211 hitter off Quintana in 19 at-bats.

Meanwhile, the White Sox are coming off Sunday's 4-3 setback in Minnesota after winning the first three games of the series. Starter Scott Carroll was pitching strong into the bottom of the sixth inning until a blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand forced him out of the game.

Manager Robin Ventura then turned to reliever Ronald Belisario, who promptly pitched into a bases-loaded jam without recording an out. Javy Guerra inherited the three baserunners and allowed all three to score, which ultimately decided the outcome.

Chicago enters the series eight games back of the AL Central-leading Tigers and within an earshot of the league's second wild card spot.

Detroit leads the season series against the White Sox, 5-4.
