Battle for Ohio Cup moves to Cincinnati
Aug 6, 2014 - 2:53 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - After splitting the first two meetings in Cleveland, the Ohio Cup now shifts to Cincinnati on Wednesday night for a pair of games between the Indians and Reds. The Indians won Monday's opener for their 10th straight victory at home in this series, but the Reds battled back to even the set with a 9-2 win last night.
Johnny Cueto scattered five hits and struck out six in his fourth complete game of the season. He won his fifth straight decision and 13th game of the season courtesy of his 10th career complete game.
His effort gave the Reds their first win in Cleveland since May 22, 2010.
"When he gets going, he's unstoppable," Reds catcher Brayan Pena said. "He was asking for that baseball from the get-go. He knew how important this game was for us. He really stepped up to the challenge."
Ramon Santiago clubbed a three-run homer and Jay Bruce went 3-for-5 with a solo shot and two RBI to help Cincinnati to the win.
Indians starter Josh Tomlin, who was recalled from Triple-A Columbus Tuesday, allowed eight hits and six runs -- five earned -- in 4 1/3 innings.
"My main goal in the game is to not give up home runs and go as deep as I can in the game," Tomlin said.
Cleveland had won five in a row overall and will now try to win this series in Cincinnati, where it has lost 14 of its last 19 versus the Reds.
Danny Salazar gets the call for the Tribe having won three straight starts. He has allowed four earned runs over 18 innings during that streak for a 2.00 earned run average.
The 24-year-old righty is coming off a 12-2 victory over Texas on Friday, charged with just one unearned run over six innings. Salazar scattered four hits and three walks over the outing, improving to 4-4 with a 4.45 ERA in 11 starts this year.
Salazar has never before faced the Reds, who counter with Mat Latos. The righty halted a two-start slide with a 5-2 win over Miami on Friday.
Latos held the Marlins to a run over seven innings, limiting the damage despite allowing five hits and four walks. He struck out five and retired the final seven batters faced.
"I battled, that's for sure," Latos told the Reds' website. "I had to bear down when I needed to and made some good pitches. I think the offense is what picked me up today. It was a good game all around. I went out there and just tried to give them as many innings as I could and make my pitches. Thankfully I was able to."
The 26-year-old righty is 3-3 on the year with a 3.07 ERA in nine starts this season and 2-0 in his career with a 5.19 ERA in three meetings with Cleveland.
