Hot hurlers square off in Milwaukee
Aug 6, 2014 - 2:53 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Two red-hot pitchers get together on the mound Wednesday night when the San Francisco Giants return to Miller Park for the second of three midweek games against the Milwaukee Brewers.San Francisco's Ryan Vogelsong tossed a two-hitter on Friday for his first career complete game while defeating the New York Mets, 5-1, The Giants' "outburst" in that one ended a stretch in which they'd given Vogelsong just three runs of support over six starts.
That offensive drought resulted in an 0-5 record for Vogelsong, in spite of a 4.01 earned run average in those games. In his last start at Milwaukee, he went seven innings and allowed three runs while getting a no-decision in San Francisco's 4-3 loss.
Milwaukee counters with right-hander Yovani Gallardo, who's not been scored upon in 16 2/3 innings -- the second-longest stretch of his career.
He allowed just four hits in seven scoreless innings and mowed down 13 in a row at one point while defeating Tampa Bay, 5-0, last Wednesday.
"Command was great," manager Ron Roenicke said.
Gallardo is making the start on an extra day's rest, a scenario in which he's performed well in the last two seasons. On six days or more rest since the start of 2013, he's 4-0 with a 3.10 earned run average.
Additionally, he's 4-1 with a 2.12 ERA in five starts against the Giants at home, and 3-1 with an even stingier 1.29 ERA in his last four starts against them regardless of site.
On Tuesday, Gerardo Parra's first hit in a Brewers uniform couldn't have come at a better time. Parra's tie-breaking homer in the seventh gave Milwaukee a 4-3 victory over the Giants.
Acquired at the trade deadline from Arizona, he also used his glove in the victory, making a nice sliding catch in foul territory to help Jeremy Jeffress get out of the eighth.
Carlos Gomez hit a two-run homer and knocked in three runs for the Brewers, who still hold a one-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central.
Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson (2-2) gave up three runs on six hits with five strikeouts over seven innings. He was scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday with a blister on his right middle finger.
Pablo Sandoval hit a three-run homer for the Giants.
Tim Lincecum got the start for San Francisco and gave up three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts over six innings. Jean Machi (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up one run over two innings.
Milwaukee was 5-2 versus the Giants last season and have beaten them five straight times at Miller Park. .
