Mets call on Wheeler against Phillies

Aug 10, 2014 - 1:12 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Zack Wheeler tries to win his fifth consecutive decision when he leads the New York Mets against the Philadelphia Phillies in the third contest of a four-game set today at Citizens Bank Park.

The righty is unbeaten over his last seven appearances since a June 25 defeat to the Oakland Athletics. Included in the winning streak is an 11-2 rout of the Phillies on July 30 when he gave up seven hits and a pair of runs across 6 2/3 innings. During the victory surge, Wheeler has given up one run in each of his starts, with the exception of the July 30 outing. He is 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA in four career starts against the Phillies.

Kyle Kendrick takes the mound for the Phillies. He is 1-3 over a recent five- start span. That includes a loss at Citi Field when he faced Wheeler on July 30. Kendrick is 8-9 with a 3.82 ERA in 25 games (19 starts) all-time against the Mets.

Last night, Lucas Duda's single in the 11th sent the Mets to a 2-1 victory. Singles from Curtis Granderson and David Wright, coupled with a walk by Eric Campbell, loaded the bases with one out in the 11th. Duda then ripped a single out to right off Antonio Bastardo (5-5) to give the Mets a one-run lead.

"Great job by (Granderson) to get on, (Wright) with a double, (Campbell) with a huge at-bat," said Duda. "I was lucky enough to elevate a ball and sneak it over the second baseman's head."

Ryan Howard singled with two outs in the home half, then Marlon Byrd drew a walk before Jeurys Familia nailed down his second save of the season by getting Domonic Brown to ground out.

Dana Eveland (1-1) registered the win for pitching a scoreless 10th inning.

"It was a good ball game," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "We pitched very, very well the whole game. That was a good grind-out win for us."

The Mets have won the first two games of this set by a run each time. They have captured 11 of their last 12 games at Citizens Bank Park.

New York has won nine of the last 11 meetings overall.
