Final/14
Rangers top Rays in 14 innings
Aug 13, 2014 - 5:11 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Cesar Ramos walked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 14th inning, giving the Texas Rangers a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.Ramos (2-5) took the mound for his first inning of work in the 14th and was betrayed by his defense, as Evan Longoria's error put Geovany Soto on base with one away. Rougned Odor and Shin-Soo Choo followed with singles, and the bases were loaded.
After a number of defensive substitutions by the Rays, Elvis Andrus flied to short left field for the second out before Adam Rosales drew a walk to force in the deciding run.
Leonys Martin had four hits and Odor had three for Texas, which has won two of three. Scott Baker (1-3) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first win of the year.
The Rangers had been 0-20 in games in which Baker pitched this season.
Both starters pitched well despite not factoring into the decision. Nick Tepesch took a no-hitter into the fifth for Texas and finished with seven innings of two-run ball. Jeremy Hellickson, who has never beaten the Rangers in six career starts, tossed six scoreless frames with six strikeouts.
Sean Rodriguez singled to left to begin the fifth inning, ending Tepesch's no- hit bid. Rodriguez advanced to second on Logan Forsythe's sacrifice bunt and third on a wild pitch. Jose Molina had a chance to drive him in, lacing a grounder sharply to third. Rodriguez broke on contact and slid head-first, but Adrian Beltre's throw to Soto at home plate was in time to keep the Rays off the scoreboard.
Another leadoff hit an inning later led to the game's first runs. Desmond Jennings ripped a triple to the wall in right center and scored on Ben Zobrist's sacrifice fly.
Matt Joyce then stepped up and crushed a Tepesch offering that came within inches of clearing the wall in right field. Joyce was sprinting the whole way and advanced to third, then scored when Odor's relay skipped past Beltre and out of play.
Joel Peralta replaced Hellickson in the seventh and failed to hold Tampa's lead, as Martin singled to start and Soto doubled. Odor put Texas on the board with a sac fly to right and Choo tied it with an RBI double to right center. Choo tried to score the go-ahead run on Andrus' single, but was thrown out at the plate.
Jeff Beliveau came on to replace Peralta with two outs and struck out Rosales to keep it tied at 2-2.
With a man on second and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Martin nearly gave the Rangers the lead. Jennings tracked down his blast to the warning track, however, and made a leaping catch up against the wall.
Game Notes
Hellickson has beaten every American League team besides Texas at least once ... Rangers outfielder Alex Rios didn't start for the second straight game with a sprained right ankle. He pinch-hit in the bottom of the 13th inning and flied out to center ... The Rays were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
