Blue Jays beat Rays in 10 innings

Aug 24, 2014 - 12:42 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Reyes drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Toronto Blue Jays picked up a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

Colby Rasmus reached on a bunt single to lead off the 10th. Joel Peralta (2-4) struck out the next two batters he faced, but Rasmus stole second to put himself in scoring position for Reyes, who ripped the first pitch he saw from Jeff Beliveau to left. Rasmus never hesitated rounding third and slid in before Matt Joyce's throw to the plate.

Dustin McGowan (5-3) allowed two baserunners in the top of the 10th but got out of the inning unscathed to pick up the win.

Reyes drove in two runs and Dioner Navarro had a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who evened this three-game set with their American League East rivals following Friday's 8-0 drubbing.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Jeremy Hellickson struck out eight in 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball for the Rays, while Mark Buehrle allowed three runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 for Toronto.

"(Hellickson) did a great job, he pitched well. Really well, actually," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We had opportunities to add on, but we didn't do that once again."

The game was completed under protest from the Rays following a controversial call in the fourth inning. Buehrle attempted to pick off Wil Myers, who was ruled safe diving back to the bag at first. Buehrle was back on the mound ready to throw his next pitch when the umpires went to review the play.

Myers was ultimately called out following a video review, but Maddon immediately protested, claiming that the call could not be challenged because Buehrle was already on the mound for his next pitch.

"The umpires are trying to get it right," said Toronto manager John Gibbons. "If they think maybe it was that close. Close plays on pick-offs all the time, but I thought they did the right thing. It turned out going in our favor."

Major League Baseball will review the call.

Tampa struck first, as Sean Rodriguez and Desmond Jennings hit consecutive singles with two outs in the visiting third before Ben Zobrist bunted in between third base and the mound for an RBI single.

In the bottom half, Danny Valencia walked and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Reyes then poked a double over a diving Brandon Guyer's head in left and Melky Cabrera drove him in with a two-bagger to center for a 2-1 lead.

The Rays went back in front in the top of the seventh. Logan Forsythe singled and Yunel Escobar walked before Jose Molina tied that game with a single to center. Rodriguez then doubled to plate Escobar and end Buehrle's outing.

Navarro restored a one-run cushion with his 10th home run in the bottom of the seventh.

After Navarro gave the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead, Aaron Sanchez tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning but Casey Janssen was unable to make the lead hold up. Myers walked, moved to second on Kevin Kiermaier's pinch-hit single and scored when James Loney blooped a single into left.
