Wada solid as Cubs complete sweep of Orioles
Aug 24, 2014 - 11:52 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Tsuyoshi Wada tossed 6 1/3 solid innings to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 2-1 victory and complete a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.Wada (4-1) had a no-hitter intact until Steve Pearce led off the seventh inning with a solo shot, which was Baltimore's lone hit of the day. The home run was the left-hander's lone blemish as he struck out eight and walked one to win his third straight start.
Arismendy Alcantara homered and Anthony Rizzo provided an RBI double for the Cubs, who have won six of their last eight games.
"We come to the field to try to play good and win every game," said Alcantara.
Baltimore starter Miguel Gonzalez (6-7), who was recalled from Double-A Bowie prior to the game, was strong in the setback, allowing just two runs on six hits with three strikeouts over 6 1/3 frames.
"We knew we were going to see three really hot pitchers coming in here," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "We scored four runs in 27 innings. You aren't going to win too many games."
Alcantara opened the scoring for the Cubs with one out in the fifth after smacking a solo shot to right-center field.
Chris Coghlan doubled to lead off the sixth and scored on Rizzo's double to the left-field corner.
The Orioles finally got to Wada in the seventh. Pearce ended Wada's no-hitter with a leadoff shot to left, making it a 2-1 game.
Neil Ramirez finished out the seventh, Pedro Strop pitched a scoreless eighth and Hector Rondon retired the Orioles in order in the ninth for his 21st save of the season.
Gonzalez made a great play to start off the game, throwing his glove behind his body to snag Coghlan's comebacker to the mound.
Wada's swinging bunt in the third was the game's first hit and the first of his career.
