Matzek shines as Rockies down D-backs

Aug 31, 2014 - 5:39 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt McBride and Charlie Blackmon each hit solo home runs to back seven stellar innings from Tyler Matzek and the Colorado Rockies edged the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday, 2-0, to even this three-game series.

McBride's second-inning home run was one of just three hits that Colorado mustered, but it was enough thanks to Matzek's dominance on the mound. The southpaw allowed just three hits and three walks over seven innings, allowing just one baserunner to reach scoring position.

Matzek (4-9) has won his last two starts following five consecutive losses.

"He's throwing the ball really well, particularly the last couple times out," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Matzek.

The Rockies ended a four-game slide.

It was another tough-luck loss for Vidal Nuno (0-4), who remains winless since moving to Arizona in a trade from the Yankees. Nuno struck out seven while yielding just a run on two hits over eight innings of work.

"I don't know what more you can do," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said of Nuno. "Didn't walk anybody, struck out seven guys, it's a shame."

Nuno hasn't won in 10 starts with Arizona despite compiling a respectable 3.23 ERA with the club. The D-backs fell to 8-18 in August.

The lefty's only real mistake in this one came with one out in the second inning, when a first-pitch breaking ball hung over the middle of the plate and McBride didn't miss it. His second home run since getting called up on Aug. 20 was a no-doubter down the left field line.

Blackmon added an insurance run in the ninth with his 16th homer of the year.

LaTroy Hawkins walked Jake Lamb with two gone in the ninth and Nolan Reimold muscled a single to right to bring the winning run to the plate, but pinch- hitter Didi Gregorius struck out. Hawkins picked up his 22nd save.

Game Notes

Reimold, who was claimed off waivers from Toronto, went 2-for-4 in his first game with Arizona ... The D-backs had won seven of eight against Colorado ... Nuno hasn't won since June 27, when he was a member of the Yankees ... Arizona went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine.
