Blackmon lifts Rockies over Giants
Sep 2, 2014 - 4:18 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Charlie Blackmon's single in the ninth lifted the Colorado Rockies to a 10-9 win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday. After LaTroy Hawkins blew his second save of the season in the away ninth, Michael McKenry singled up the middle off Sergio Romo (5-4) to lead off the home half, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Rutledge and advanced to third on Rafael Ynoa's infield single with two outs.
Blackmon stepped in and served the first pitch he saw into right to win the game.
Ben Paulsen homered in the win, while Blackmon, Rutledge and DJ LaMahieu each had two RBI.
"The bottom line is guys keep fighting regardless of where we're at in the standings," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "We had some big hits, some big at-bats."
The two teams concluded a suspended game from May 22 prior to the regularly scheduled matchup, with Hunter Pence's double highlighting a two-run eighth as the Giants grabbed a 4-2 win.
Pence, who homered in the setback, and Brandon Crawford each had three RBI. Gregor Blanco, Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval had an RBI apiece for the Giants, who had their season-high seven-game winning streak snapped.
The Rockies, who were down 7-2, got back in the game in the sixth with four runs to chase Giants starter Tim Hudson from the contest. Corey Dickerson walked before McKenry and Rutledge singled to plate a run. Another run scored when Matt McBride reached on an error by second baseman Joe Panik.
Javier Lopez relieved Hudson to face Ynoa, who made his major league debut. Ynoa slugged a single into left-center for a 7-5 margin and Blackmon capped the scoring with an RBI groundout.
Jean Machi took the hill in the seventh and a wild pitch proved costly. Dickerson struck out to open the inning, but reached first when the third strike got away from Posey.
McKenry moved Dickerson over with a bunt, then Rutledge sent an RBI single into left that tied the game at 7-7. A pinch-hitting Paulsen then stepped in and crushed a 1-1 changeup over the out-of-town scoreboard in right that gave Colorado its first lead of the game.
"Crazy things could happen here," said Hudson. "It was a tough couple of innings there in the sixth and seventh."
Hawkins (3-2) came in to close in the ninth and allowed three straight hits that tied the game. Panik doubled to start things, Posey knocked him in with a single and Sandoval drove pinch-runner Juan Perez home with a base hit up the middle.
Earlier, Pence extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a three-run homer to right-center in the first.
Rockies starter Franklin Morales' bumpy first inning continued with back-to- back walks to Joaquin Arias and Blanco. Crawford then sent an RBI single into right that scored Arias.
Colorado cut the deficit in half courtesy of a two-run triple from LaMahieu with two outs in the second.
The duo of Arias and Blanco were at it again in the fourth with back-to-back singles to set up Crawford's RBI knock which made it 5-2 Giants.
Blanco added a run-scoring groundout in the fifth with the bases loaded and Crawford followed with a double that knocked in Pence to give San Francisco its five-run advantage.
Game Notes
