Cabrera powers Tigers past Giants
Sep 8, 2014 - 5:45 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBI, helping the Detroit Tigers dodge a three-game sweep with a 6-1 win over the San Francisco Giants Sunday night.Detroit rookie Kyle Lobstein (1-0) picked up his first major league win after allowing a run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two.
The Tigers will remain at Comerica Park for a critical three-game set against Kansas City that starts on Monday. They trail the AL Central-leading Royals by two games.
"Every win is crucial," said Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter. "We need it."
San Francisco, which lost for just the third time in its last 12 games, is also in a division race. The club is three games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
Hunter had three hits for Detroit, including an RBI single with two outs in the third. Hunter then scored when San Francisco's Tim Hudson (9-10) served up the Cabrera homer, a drive to left-center field.
"I felt like I was making some pretty good pitches for the most part," Hudson said. "Obviously the ball I threw to Miggy right there, I don't think there's anything else he could have done but hit it out."
The Tigers were threatening to extend their lead as J.D. Martinez singled and Don Kelly walked to begin the fourth. But after a passed ball, Hudson, who hadn't faced Detroit in a decade, retired the next three batters to keep it a 3-0 game.
San Francisco scored a run in the fifth on Angel Pagan's RBI infield single and had two aboard in the seventh. Pagan hit a fly ball to right that wasn't deep enough to score Joaquin Arias from third base and Joe Panik popped out to the catcher in foul territory.
The Tigers put up another three-spot in the bottom of the inning. Ian Kinsler knocked in a run with a double and Cabrera later singled, giving him 100 RBI for an 11th straight season. Victor Martinez then doubled home Cabrera.
Game Notes
Cabrera is the fifth player with 100 RBI in 11 straight seasons. He joins Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Alex Rodriguez and Al Simmons ... Giants right fielder Hunter Pence went 0-for-3 to snap an 18-game hitting streak ... Hudson gave up eight hits in six innings ... The Tigers stole four bases in a game for the first time since Aug. 18, 2009 vs. Seattle.
