Mets score twice in ninth to down Rockies
Sep 9, 2014 - 4:28 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Wilmer Flores drove a sacrifice fly to center that capped a two-run rally in the ninth and lifted the New York Mets to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a three-game set on Monday.Travis d'Arnaud began the ninth with a double off Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins (3-3), then Curtis Granderson tied the game with a triple to right- center. Flores followed with a shallow fly to center that allowed Granderson to try for the win. Drew Stubbs settled under the fly, but his throw home was up the third-base line as Granderson slid in safely.
"The bullpen did a real good job," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "They got some big hits in the ninth inning and that is what it came down to."
Carlos Torres (7-5) picked up the win for the Mets, who have won five of their last six.
Jon Niese allowed one run on eight hits and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision for New York.
"It was kind of off and on," said Niese. "There were some (pitches) that were good and some that weren't."
Colorado starter Jordan Lyles was also solid in a no-decision, surrendering one run on three hits over six innings.
Nolan Arenado and Michael Cuddyer homered as the Rockies had their four-game winning streak snapped.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis walked with one out in the first and Lucas Duda doubled two batters later to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.
Cuddyer, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the game, got the run back an inning later with a leadoff homer to left. Cuddyer, the 2013 NL batting champion, had only played in 34 games in an injury-plagued season.
The Rockies received leadoff doubles in the third and seventh innings, but couldn't push a run across in either instance.
Arenado led off the eighth inning with a shot out to left off Vic Black, who was also activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game, and Colorado grabbed their first lead of the game.
Game Notes
Colorado last won five straight in mid-June ... The Mets had just four hits entering the ninth ... Hawkins has three blown saves this season ... Arenado has 60 RBI.
