Garza aims to find win column against Reds
Sep 14, 2014 - 11:53 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Garza tries to get back on the winning track when the Milwaukee Brewers close a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds today at Miller Park.Garza has just one decision in his last four starts (0-1). The right-hander's last win came July 24 versus the Mets. He's 2-3 with a 4.44 ERA in eight career starts against Cincinnati.
Mike Leake, who has a 2-0 mark over his previous five starts, takes the mound for the Reds. Leake hasn't lost since Aug. 13 against the Red Sox. He's 2-2 with a 4.62 ERA in eight previous starts versus Milwaukee.
Last night, Billy Hamilton hit a two-run triple and three Cincinnati pitchers combined to toss a two-hitter in the Reds' 5-1 win. Todd Frazier had three hits and scored two runs for the Reds, who have won four of their last five games.
David Holmberg (1-1) picked up his first major league win after tossing six solid innings. He gave up both Milwaukee hits, a solo home run by Aramis Ramirez and an infield single by Hector Gomez.
"He was real sharp there at the end, making some really good pitches," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "
Sam LeCure worked two frames and Jumbo Diaz pitched the ninth.
Yovani Gallardo (8-10) allowed two runs on four hits over six innings for the Brewers, who have lost Gallardo's last eight starts at Miller Park.
"My timing, I think that's very important for me," Gallardo said. "I was able to get that going right away."
Despite having its winning streak stopped at three games, Milwaukee stayed 1 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh for the NL's second wild card spot.
The Reds lead the season series, 8-7.
