Brewers try to win rubber match with Reds

Sep 25, 2014 - 12:51 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - After holding off elimination for at least one more day, the Milwaukee Brewers will try on Thursday afternoon to win the rubber match of their three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds.

The Brewers elimination number remained at one after they beat the Reds 5-0 on Wednesday night and the San Francisco Giants lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Milwaukee would still be eliminated with a loss today or a victory by San Francisco later tonight over the San Diego Padres.

Kyle Lohse answered the call on Wednesday, hurling a two-hit shutout. He also drove in a run and struck out six.

Jean Segura had two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs, while Carlos Gomez produced a run-scoring double in just Milwaukee's second victory in its past seven games.

Jack Hannahan had the Reds' only hits, a pair of singles, and Daniel Corcino took the loss, the club's seventh in nine games, after allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over 4 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati also lost center fielder Billy Hamilton to a mild concussion as he hit his head on the bottom portion of the fence while robbing Milwaukee's Ryan Braun of a possible home run in the third inning.

Yovani Gallardo will try to follow up Lohse's gem with one of his own as he aims for his first victory since Aug. 16. He has lost four decisions over six starts since, with Milwaukee losing all six outings.

Gallardo pitched well enough to win on Friday at Pittsburgh, but did not factor into a 4-2 setback. The righty hurled seven scoreless innings of five- hit ball, striking out 11 to just one walk.

Gallardo is 8-10 with a 3.46 earned run average this season and 7-8 lifetime versus the Reds with a 4.12 ERA.

Southpaw David Holmberg will start today's finale for Cincinnati.

Holmberg picked up the first win of his career on Sept. 13, beating Milwaukee after holding the club to a run over six innings on two hits and a pair of walks. The 23-year-old then followed up with a solid effort in a 2-1 loss to St. Louis, giving up both runs on solo homers over six innings of work.

Holmberg is 1-2 with a 5.25 ERA in six games this season with four starts.

These clubs have split 18 meetings on the year, with the Reds going 6-3 at home versus the Brewers.
