Dodgers hope to break the brooms out on Rockies
Apr 19, 2015 - 2:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon McCarthy tries to pitch the Los Angeles Dodgers to a three-game sweep on Sunday when they close out their set with the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium. After winning his Dodgers debut, McCarthy didn't get a decision on Monday against Seattle, as he allowed five runs and six hits in seven innings of his team's 6-5 win. The righty did strike out 10 batters without allowing a walk and has fanned 19 batters in 12 innings this season.
McCarthy has yet to beat the Rockies in four starts against them, going 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA.
Colorado, meanwhile, will counter with righty Eddie Butler, who is coming off his first win of the season on Monday in San Francisco. Butler scattered five hits and struck out six over 5 1/3 scoreless innings in that one to improve to 1-0, while lowering his ERA to 1.64.
Butler has faced the Dodgers twice, but is 0-1 with a 9.90 ERA against them.
Los Angeles won for the sixth straight time on Saturday, as Adrian Gonzalez continued his torrid start to the season and drove in three runs to lead the Dodgers to a 6-3 win. Yasiel Puig, Howie Kendrick and Yasmani Grandal each knocked in a run, while Jimmy Rollins reached base three times and scored twice in the win, the team's seventh in the last nine games.
Gonzalez, who is hitting .523 with five home runs and 14 RBI, has hit safely in all 11 games for the Dodgers and with another hit on Sunday, he'd have the longest streak by a Dodgers player to open a season since Matt Kemp's 14-game run in 2009.
Zack Greinke (2-0) surrendered three runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings to get the win.
"I threw a bunch of good pitches tonight," Greinke said. "My fastball and changeup were working pretty well. That could be one of the toughest lineups in the league over there. I'm just trying to make pitches."
DJ LaMahieu homered in the loss and Troy Tulowitzki had an RBI for the Rockies.
Jordan Lyles (1-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on five hits in six innings. Colorado has lost two straight following a three-game winning streak.
"Jordan battled well. He had some walks he had to work around," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "We just haven't played clean enough to win those first two games."
The Dodgers went 13-6 versus the Rockies last season and have swept the past two three-game sets played in Los Angeles.
