D-backs seek a win in opener with Rockies

Apr 27, 2015 - 2:09 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks hope to get back on the winning side of things when they kick off a three-game series Monday versus the NL West-rival Colorado Rockies at Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks were swept in three games by the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend and lost for the fifth time in seven tries with Sunday's 8-0 loss.

Pittsburgh banged out 14 hits to Arizona's three and was led Francisco Liriano's 6 1/3 scoreless innings. He struck out seven and survived for the win despite walking six batters. D-backs starter Jeremy Hellickson was roughed up for four runs in 4 2/3 innings to fall to 1-3.

"When he gets in trouble, he doesn't control the count," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "When you fall behind good hitters, they're going to get you."

Ender Inciarte, A.J. Pollock and Jordan Pacheco provided the hits for Arizona, which produced three runs during the weekend series.

Chase Anderson draws the start for the Diamondbacks Monday and has no record through three starts with a 3.00 earned run average. Anderson pitched well the last time out, a 7-1 loss to the Texas Rangers in which he surrendered just a run and three hits over seven innings for the no-decision.

Anderson has made four career starts against Colorado and the right-hander is 3-1 with a 3.52 ERA.

The Rockies were scheduled to close out a three-game series versus the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, but inclement weather postponed those plans. A makeup date has yet to be announced.

The teams had split the first two games, as Colorado notched a 6-4 win on Friday and San Francisco picked up a 5-4 victory in 11 innings on Saturday.

Colorado had won three in a row until Saturday's defeat and will send Tyler Matzek to the bump Monday in the desert. Matzek is 1-0 with a 2.40 earned run average in three starts and recorded a no-decision in last Tuesday's 7-6 loss to San Diego, hurling five innings of two-run ball.

Matzek hasn't allowed more than two runs in each of his starts and the left- hander will face Arizona for a third time in his career. In the first two starts in this series, he is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA.

The Rockies will visit the Padres for three games on this road trip and went 10-9 against the D-backs last season. Colorado is unbeaten in the previous four meetings between the NL West foes.
