Weaver goes for Halos in Oakland

Apr 28, 2015 - 2:26 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jered Weaver looks to secure his first victory of the season on Tuesday night as the Los Angeles Angels open up a three-game set with the hosting Oakland Athletics.

Weaver is 0-2 with a 5.24 earned run average through four starts, but has not factored into the decision of his last two outings. That includes last Wednesday's start versus Oakland in which Los Angeles lost a 9-2 decision.

The right-hander allowed eight hits over six innings of that outing, but did not walk a batter and limited the damage to one run that scored on a groundout.

Weaver is 13-9 with a 2.46 ERA in 31 career meetings with Oakland.

Sonny Gray beat the Athletics in last week's matchup and will counter Weaver again tonight.

The righty is 2-0 with a 1.91 ERA on the season after limiting the A's to a run, two hits and a pair of walks over seven innings. Gray also struck out seven and is 3-1 lifetime in this matchup with a 2.45 ERA in seven games (6 starts).

Oakland has lost four straight and six of its last eight, following up a 2-0 setback to the Angels on Thursday by getting swept in three games versus the Houston Astros. The A's lost Sunday's finale 7-6 as reliever Tyler Clippard was unable to lock down a four-out save as he yielded a two-run double in the ninth inning to Houston's Evan Gattis.

Drew Pomeranz started and allowed five runs -- three earned -- in five innings. Brett Lawrie drove in three runs for the A's.

The Angels had a three-game win streak snapped with Sunday's 5-4 setback to the Texas Rangers, losing in 11 innings. Los Angeles plated a pair of runs in the top of the frame before Erick Aybar connected on an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

However, Los Angeles could not tie the game as Grant Green struck out to end the contest.

Mike Trout smacked a two-run homer and C.J. Cron went 4-for-4 for the Angels.

"There were a few things we didn't do on the field. We had good at-bats with not a lot to show for it," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

Los Angeles had a busy off day on Monday, finalizing the trade to send outfielder Josh Hamilton to the Rangers for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

The Angels are reportedly going to pay about $68 million of the $83 million that is owed to Hamilton, a former AL MVP, through the 2017 season.

Hamilton signed a five-year, $125 million contract with the Angels in December of 2012, but had a disappointing first season with the club and was limited to just 89 games by injuries last year.

The 1999 No. 1 overall pick managed just 10 homers and 44 RBI along with a .263 average in 2014, missing nearly two months with a thumb injury and most of September with shoulder problems. Hamilton returned for the AL Division Series, but was hitless in 13 at-bats as the Angels were swept by Kansas City.

The Angels and Athletics split a four-game set in Anaheim from April 20-23 and Los Angeles has won nine of the previous 12 encounters overall.
