Marlins seek more success in San Francisco

May 10, 2015 - 1:50 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins target a series win over the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants when the two clubs close out a four-game set Sunday at AT&T Park.

The Marlins grabbed a 2-1 lead in this series with Saturday's 6-2 victory behind strong pitching from David Phelps and two RBI out of Donovan Solano and Adeiny Hechavarria.

Phelps is now 2-0 on the season after hurling six innings of one-run ball.

"The shut down innings were huge," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "He mixed his pitches in and out."

Marcell Ozuna homered for the Marlins, who improved to 12-5 in the last 17 games and rebounded from Friday's 6-0 loss. Miami took the opener on Thursday by a 7-2 score and has recorded five or more runs three times in the past four games.

Miami is 3-3 on a 10-game trek and will visit the Los Angeles Dodgers for three games at Chavez Ravine.

Dee Gordon did not play for the Marlins because of a sore right leg and is batting .560 during a 12-game hitting streak. Gordon leads the majors with a .437 batting average.

The Marlins hope Mat Latos can build on his last start when he takes the ball Sunday afternoon. Latos lost his first three starts with Miami, then posted back-to-back no-decisions. He came out on top in Tuesday's 2-1 victory at Washington and pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball.

Latos struck out a season-high six batters, but walked five. The righty is 1-2 in three road assignments and 4-3 with a 2.19 ERA in 11 career starts against the Giants. Miami is 3-3 in his six appearances this season.

San Francisco has dropped three of four games after winning five straight and ace Madison Bumgarner was banged around for three runs in five innings with 10 strikeouts and two walks for the loss.

"He missed his spot a few times and they took advantage of it," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He made three or four mistakes there and they didn't miss them."

Brandon Crawford had two hits and an RBI, while Joe Panik knocked in a run for the Giants, who fell to 6-3 on a 10-game homestand.

The Giants will visit Houston and Cincinnati next.

Much like Miami's Latos, Ryan Vogelsong tasted victory for the first time this season in his most recent start on Tuesday. Vogelsong draws the start Sunday.

In the 6-0 win over San Diego on Tuesday, Vogelsong fired seven shutout innings and scattered just three hits. He bounced back from a rough start in Los Angeles, where he gave up four homers and six runs in only three innings. He is 1-2 with a 6.84 ERA in six games (4 starts) this season.

The right-hander has faced the Marlins nine times (5 starts) in his career and owns a 3-3 record with a 1.99 ERA.

San Francisco has lost 16 of the last 22 versus Miami in the Bay Area.
